I was impressed that the framerate did not suffer badly with the amount of enemies on-screen. The only bizarre thing I noticed was the way enemies would often charge at me uniformly in a zig-zag manner, which may or may not have been intentional. What I particularly enjoyed was seeing an impressive cast of characters and their well-created models.The game of WO4U is probably my favourite gameplay so far. I really enjoyed having multiple methods of combining attacks, from charge attack and magic attacks. Add to this the ability to rotate between three characters on the battlefield and I never got bored of smashing heads. I also really enjoyed abilities such as being able to ride around the field on a literal wave, smashing through enemies as I went. This kind of eccentric and crazy combat is what Warriors is famous for and I hope it never changes.Although the campaign largely revolves around "go here and beat X", this is precisely why we play DW. Beating up enemies by the thousands has never been more enjoyable for me. Being able to upgrade my character like an RPG became incredibly satisfying. The downside of this is at many characters are not unlocked until later in the game, so you have to repeat old missions for XP which can be a bit repetitive since Lu Bu etc. are not unlocked until very late in the game.One notable flaw in the gameplay flow is the dialogue. Subtitles disappear during certain actions such as unity magic, meaning you can miss out on little bits of the story. A similar issue is with unlocking doors, as the game leads you to believe this hinges on defeating enemies, but is usually achieved once the dialogue after beating an enemy is complete, meaning any overkill attacks can see you standing still for a good 30 seconds waiting for a conversation to end and a door to open. It's not a huge problem, just a mild annoyance.The story of WO4U is enjoyable but voluntary in the sense that you can engage as little or as much as you want, which is a very good way to have a story for me. I played through seven chapters, which generally saw an overarching bad guy in each chapter to beat at the end before they join you going forward. WO4U also has the advantage of going beyond traditional DW lore and includes Greek mythology characters such as Zeus so it captures your interest a bit more and it's quite humorous to see the exchanges of dialogue between such characters.Overall, WO4U is exactly what we need after the exalting disappointment of a car-crash that was DW9. Having said that, I would also like to highlight the continued terrible practice of the publishers, as WO4U is the game WO4 should have been at launch. There is not need for two versions of the game at full price, so the score has been impacted for this. If you love Warriors, you should love this too, regardless. Just make sure to avoid the base version.

If you’ve already played and enjoyed Orochi 4 itself, the Ultimate expansion makes everything better. The only downside is the asking price ($39.99) for existing owners of the game is a bit high for an add-on, but…you really do get a lot for the money. If you’re a fan and you haven’t already bought this, it is a worthwhile purchase. If you are more casually interested in Warriors stuff, maybe wait for a sale….but still get it. It won’t disappoint you with many more hours of mook-smooshing fun.

In the end, Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate is a mediocre Musou title. The action of wiping out giant hordes of enemies is exhilarating at first and the gameplay is rather polished but unfortunately, that's all there is to it and there's no feeling of escalation.

For newcomers, WARRIORS OROCHI 4 Ultimate is easy to recommend if you simply want a mindless button masher, enjoy killing thousands of enemies with ease, don’t mind outdated graphics and repetitive missions and audio. There’s not much thinking involved unless you’re trying to follow along with the narrative and keep track of the insane amount of characters, but generally gamers that play Musou’s know what they are getting into. If you’ve ever played a Dynasty Warriors in the past, you’ll also know what you’re exactly signing up for, albeit with a ton more content this time around.

Visual pop-in and map confusion aside, this game is a great deal of fun, and with so many characters to choose from finding your ideal team has never been so challenging. If you have enjoyed the previous games in the series, then this is a no brainer, but if you haven't then Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate could well be the stepping stone you need.

There is quite frankly an overwhelming amount of content in Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate – while those upgrading from the base game may find it difficult to justify the cost outside of Infinity Mode, there’s no question that anybody tossing up between the base Orochi 4 and Ultimate at this point should absolutely go with the latter.

In the world obsessed with Souls-likes, Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate is a great reminder that action games can be fast, frantic and fun, too. Hyperactive J-rock paces the heated action that is presented in a steady frame-rate throughout despite all things happening on screen. Responsive and effortless controls keep up the flow beautifully and I, for one, didn’t get tired of the featured gameplay that is a whole lot more forthcoming and easier to grasp than in individual titles in Samurai and Dynasty Warriors series. As a separate and quite pricey upgrade, the Ultimate edition doesn’t feel all that essential if you own Warriors Orochi 4 already. However, as a bundle to the newcomers, it’s a great entry point to the extravagant and action-packed franchise.

At this point, you are most likely either in or out when it comes to the series. Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate is a fun Warriors game, but won’t change your mind on the genre.

As a standalone game for fans of the series that don’t already own Warriors Orochi 4, the Ultimate version would be the best option to procure as the added content makes the original a little redundant. As for DLC this a very pricey in comparison to other DLC and could be a tough sell. But if you enjoy this hack’n’slash series then it is very fun to play and worth picking up. For hardcore fans, the extra chapters, characters and infinity game mode may be enough to persuade you to add it on.

Despite my own disappointment with the last few installments of this series, Warriors Orochi 4 reminds me why I fell in love with it all those years ago with Dynasty Warriors Gundam. It’s tight, polished, chockful of content, and an almost constant dopamine rush.

The combat is fun and exciting at all times and the newly included magic abilities gives the combat even more depth. Being able to play the entire campaign in co-op is a nice addition and this inclusion does give the game even more in terms of replay ability. Technically the game holds up really well throughout your time with the game and I’m pleased to say that there aren’t any issues that hold the game back. You can tell that each different mechanic that’s present in the game has had a lot of thought and effort placed into them which in turn makes the gameplay very addictive. The presentation side of the game isn’t bad I just felt that both the visuals and sound design were lacking in some areas. I felt that the game needed to be more challenging because at times it can be a little too easy. Overall I really enjoy the Warriors Orochi series because I’ve found each game in the series to be very fun and addictive, and thankfully I’m pleased to say that Warriors Orochi 4 is no different. In fact this time around for me the series has become even more fun and addictive because there’s more depth when it comes to the crux of the game, which is of course its combat. I do however have a small gripe when it comes to its combat though and that is that it isn’t challenging enough, but thankfully I was easily able to look past this. In terms of content the game has a lot for you to be getting on with and the content that is available to you has tons of variety within it. I was also pleased to learn that the content has no technichal problems either and this does make each intricate mechanic shine brightly throughout your time with the game. At the end of the day then if your a fan of the Warriors Orochi franchise then you will thoroughly enjoy what this game has to offer and with the added inclusion of being able to play the whole campaign in co-op you’re very unlikely to get bored of this game anytime soon. Now with the Ultimate content includes Mythical gods and heroes from ages long ago, including Gaia, Achilles, and Joan of Arc, join a cast of over 170 playable characters in the thrilling new entry to the popular ‘1 vs. 1,000’ hack-and-slash series where heroes and the gods of ancient history band together seeking the truth behind the powerful forces who have transported them to wage war in this mysterious new world. The latest entry introduces the all-new Infinity Mode, taking players on a harrowing adventure through The Trials of Zeus where they must clear 12 towers representing each sign of the zodiac, each more challenging than the last. The new version of the game brings a load of content designed specifically for fans of the Koei Tecmo crossover universe, those who will benefit most from this "update". On the other hand, the experience remains what it was in the beginning: a reckless action, naturally prone to a monotonous gait, but overall better than other congeners and in its own way galvanizing, if taken in small doses.

Warriors Orochi 4 is one of the best Warriors series games with more than 170 warriors, and the Ultimate version makes the gameplay even deeper. However, the updated content is very limited and a little bit expensive. For those gamers who already own Warriors Orochi 4, it doesn't seem worthy.
