While not quite an unmitigated disaster, Dynasty Warriors 9 is pretty bad. Even if you can live with the subpar presentation, the game quickly gets boring due to a lack of important or interesting things that can be done in the world. The combat is fine, but with fewer opportunities to use it, the button-mashing joy inherent in the series is nowhere to be found.

The other issue that I have personally found is that the generals don't render in, my character is batting off enemies while waiting for the general to pop in and then as the said general is the only thing worth fighting.The game feels completely empty, they should have named the game Chinese horse riding simulator with occasional gathering and fighting. Now fighting itself is dead as a doornail in this entry to the series. Mash 1 button with occasional Musou attack and that's it, while they have reintroduced archery most arrows will bounce off their targets and mainly serves to shoot wild animals for materials. Fishing is also a sad joke, mash 1 button and tada fish. The hideaway mechanic seemed like a good idea at first but mostly it serve's to remind you how empty the game is, and inviting officers over to bond revolves of them asking "Feed Me" and if you remembered to buy a stove, you are now playing how to make a cat like you simulator.My final note, this game has so much potential but as it stands right now id suggest holding off until they add more to the game, I hope if they continue making Extreme legends and Empires. My first suggestion is, get rid off that grappling hook or limit it to mountain climbing. Second, add more objectives to sieges and for the love of god improve the A.I

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a complete mess. The open-world elements like crafting, hunting and finding landmarks don’t fit with the story, and the technological sacrifices made to include them ensure that the mass battle sequences are nearly non-functional.

Terrible frame rate, battles spread out all over the place then finished in seconds. You can see what they were trying to do with the open world but in doing so they lost the essence that made SSM (DW) a great series. The voice acting is worse the DW2, the combat is slow and unresponsive and it is, for lack of a better word....boring.

Dynasty Warriors 9 brings an overdue and very welcome change to the series, introducing a massive open world with lots of missions to do, an impressive characters roster and effective gameplay improvements. It's a real pity that much of this gets offset by a very lackluster technical production and some bad design choices. It's definitely the first step in the right direction for the series, but it needs much more perfecting.

I think that tinkering and experimenting is wonderful, but I will also agree with everyone else that this title could have used some more player experience testing. The combat itself can be rather fun. But the tactical element does not feel particularly vital. My contribution to the fights as a whole doesnt feel that vital. Especially since I have taken to ignoring major battle points for hours at a time without any consequence. In the other games, the actual game will expire and you can lose by doing nothing. I like the open world concept, but it needs to be metered by a sense of urgency, or no battle at all perhaps. Or maybe you as the PC give the word to go ahead with a particular battle.I'm enjoying the hell out of this game regardless of those criticisms, but I can see why others would score it lower. I'm also not a big fan of open-world games anymore, since it's in every damn game nowadays. And the world in DW9 is kinda boring.The only thing I could think of while playing the first hour was: "this is not the game I've been waiting for since DW8, almost 5 years ago".But then the patch came out and the framerate got a lot better, and I gave it a few more hours, and oh boy the game got better. The combat is kinda smooth and the new combo system is quite nice. I like the way the story is handled, kinda interesting to see a new way of telling the same old story in Dynasty Warriors. The big open-world is still boring but it's starting to grow on me, especially since it's the only gameworld where I really feel like i'm taking part in a huge battlefield.Even with it's ups and downs, I do respect Omega Force for trying something new.It might not be the Dynasty Warriors 9 I wanted, and compared to Dynasty Warriors 8 it's a step back, but if you're a fan of Warriors/Musou like me, then give it a try. Unfortunately, the changes in Dynasty Warriors 9 are a bit too superficial and kept too much of what made the series suffer in previous titles. The controls and animations need tightening, and the storytelling needs to evolve to a point where it's more coherent. If you're a fan of the Musou franchise, there's a lot of new stuff to experience and enjoy here. Dynasty Warriors 9 isn't likely to attract a ton of new fans, but it sets the groundwork for the future of the series, and we'll likely see the real fruits of this new direction in the next few entries in the franchise.

However, this isn't the case with Dynasty Warriors 9 which has thrown all the old voices out the window. Now it sounds like dozens of characters have been voiced by two different people. Many of the new voices barely fit the characters that they're assigned to, and the delivery is very often painful. It's so bad at times that it goes beyond being a joke and simply cheapens the overall experience (Resident Evil on PS1 comes to mind). Thankfully, Japanese and even Chinese dubs are included for your enjoyment. Dynasty Warriors has been on a steady run since Dynasty Warriors 7, and now it's on a slight decline again. Dynasty Warriors 9 goes open world and the result is a game of extreme ups and downs. For every gloriously huge battle there's a boring stint of traversal across a dreadfully barren map. For every interesting story moment or interaction, there's a horribly ugly graphical glitch. Factor in an unconvincing combat system that's been overhauled, and you've got a Dynasty Warriors title that may or may not disappoint the most dedicated of fans. There's still some good historical hack and slash fun to be had here, so I give it a thumbs up for those that are fans of the series.
