While the voice acting can certainly be overbearing and campy, it really contributes to the Lovecraftian atmosphere the game is striving for. This is honestly one of my favourite indie games of all time. It was the first game I ever bought immediately after trying it on game pass. I just ordered to import a physical version of a PS5 copy because it was such an incredible experience. I really think it deserves a higher rating and I’m looking forward to what the studio can bring in the future if they keep exploring this genre.

Call of the Sea can be described as: a forgettable adventure, sprinkled with fun, but easy puzzles. The exposition-heavy "narration" of the main heroine ruins the atmosphere of this journey, which isn't that strong to begin with, especially for a story dealing with eldritch terrors from beyond. The only reason to play this are the puzzles, although they too fail to keep you invested, as you won't really care about reaching the end, especially if a fan of Lovecraft, which will instantly turn the plot into an extremely predictable one. It has its moments, sure, and the visuals are beautiful, but this is generally a mediocre experience.

It's not ideal for achievement hunters (unless you're trying to play it with a guide in hand). Something short.Lo Meh !:If they told me this is a Sea of Thieves “explore an island” mission, I would believe it. With a guide all achievements are easy (so joke). Ideally, you should try to finish the game by yourself and then replay the chapters to get all the achievements. There are achievements that are absurd and if it weren't for someone already taking them out, they would not believe they are there (that includes achievements of seeing murals, having all the notes and per chapter there is a well-hidden object to find.). Personally I am up to the cap of the Lovecraftian references in this type of games they should work it more (I say this because I recently finished Moon of Madness and more of the same primal octopuses from outer space)

It’s hard to explain but like many times does not feel like a puzzle and more like a maze that you are just lost there with no clue of what to do next. Good puzzle games can be hard but they are design in a way that you at least know what the objective of the puzzle is. This puzzles many times feel like you have no clue what are even even supposed to be doing. Had to look for a walkthrough a few times because I was completely stuck. I was expecting a leisurely and fun experience akin to exploring Disney World's various theme parks. However, this game is nothing like that. Though the landscapes in the game are often breath-taking, I was amazed at how technically complex the game is. The early puzzles are related to the natives and weren't too bad to solve, but then Norah encounters numerous machinery of varying types all of which are out of commission that she must restore. Harry's goal was to find a cure for Norah's strange sickness, but it's hard to see a connection between that goal and all the gizmos the expedition was using. Unfortunately, after awhile you really don't care about Harry and all the gushing he does about Norah. The puzzles get harder and harder and the game is completely fantasy driven with no basis in reality. You really have to love complex puzzle solving to complete this game and apparently, based on reviews, some players are fine with that challenge. Ultimately, I couldn't finish it despite having the aid of a walkthrough. Got close, but bungled the last bit to open the final wall that would have led to the conclusion.

The puzzles can be tough and seem unfair at times, but overall feel very solid in how they were crafted. The conclusion to the story of Nora, her illness, the previous expedition, and the true nature of the island left a satisfying feeling once I had completed it.

The first half of the game was fine but the second felt like a chore to complete. The puzzles were not overly challenging but often time was wasted trying to figure out what to do next. I played it on Game Pass so if you have that maybe try it but I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you really like puzzle games.

Call of the Sea puts all its eggs into its puzzles. They're fun to solve and feel as rewarding as slaying a boss in some of the most difficult games. The mysterious island Norah explores is gorgeous and full of mysteries that even Nathan Drake would appreciate. It's just a shame that its narrative is such a letdown. Norah may be the main character but I think Harry's adventure would have made a more compelling narrative.

Aesthetically, the game looks really pretty and is totally evocative of its 1930s setting. The game is plagued with hammy dialogue that makes it feel totally campy and like an old B-movie, but not altogether terrible when coupled with the Lovecraftian influence it draws on. Call of the Sea is a mostly fun puzzle game that falls short on the mystery it tries to have you unveil. While it looks aesthetically pleasing and ticks a lot of boxes for its period setting, the story is lacklustre and predictable.

A wonderfully crafted fantastic adventure in the style of Jules Verne and H. P. Lovercraft with great puzzles and an immersive atmosphere. Don't miss it.

Call of the Sea is a enjoyable first person puzzler that lays on said puzzles thick and fast. That it also looks stunning didn’t hurt my time with it. Having access to the journal is a great touch, and the story kept me hooked and keen to see what was next throughout.

I thought it was a really quality adventure. I've read people say it is slow game. I think those people may have struggled with the puzzles, or were just used to action packed titles. To me it's a challenging puzzle solving game, that will really test your mind. Some puzzles can really stump you, and I enjoyed that. I loved spending a hour on a couple puzzles, and the rewarding feeling of finally figuring it out. I loved the story, as well as the time period. You play as Norah, a woman with a strange unexplainable disease. It leaves spots on her hands, and makes her feel very sick. her husband goes on a expedition to a island in the South Pacific to find a cure for her. he has yet to return so Norah goes to find him. She finds much , much more on this beautiful island. The story really changes as it goes, and towards the end really has a Lovecraft feel to it.The game is just so beautiful. From the lush island to the under ocean scenes, Even the Dark caves, and other creepy areas just look so great. I really enjoy the art style of this one a lot. The colors are so vibrant, and the areas are designed so well. It is some what linear, but yet still let's you have areas to some what explore for clues. I never got lost or felt like I only had one path. Looking for clues, and hidden items just gave me a really nice level of enjoyment. Each clue found, and puzzle solved just feels you with a high level of reward. I experienced no glitches, or areas that gave me issues as far as design. It all really works quite smoothly. That goes for the controls as well. The entire experience is just really well designed. I'd go to the point of saying maybe one of the best designed games this year. I was pulled in from start to finish, and only a few times felt repetition or like it was dragging on. I never felt like the game was rushed, or felt any design flaws. I actually felt quite the different. I felt that this one was sort of a hidden gem. I hope people take the time to play it on Game Pass, and then add to their personal collections.I can't end the review without talking about the voice acting and music. The sounds of this game may actually be the biggest reason to enjoy it. The music is just out standing, and fits right along into the adventure making it feel so epic at times. the sounds are perfect from oceans to the sounds the puzzles make as you solve them. It all just sounds amazing. The voice acting is also such positive point to the story delivered. Every one does an amazing job, but one performance just stands out far above the others. Cissy Jones. I believe, and yes this is my opinion. Cissy Jones is the best voice actor in video games today. She has done so many outstanding characters from Fury in Darksiders 3 to Delilah in FireWatch. Joyce Price in Life is Strange to Kelsey in The Wolf Among Us. Could go on and on like Norma in the Walking Dead or Sloane in Destiny. She is just a legend in the industry, and any time I see she is voice acting in a game it's a instant pickup because I know the quality of story telling, that will more than likely be delivered in game. If you don't know the name, and you enjoy quality story driven games check out more of her work. Call of the Sea is another one of her masterpieces, and the story is just unforgettable.

When I finished Call of the Sea, I couldn’t help but smile. It was such an incredible journey with an intriguing story and a well-thought-out ending. From start to finish, with the exception of a couple of frustrating puzzles, I truly enjoyed this game. Considering it’s is launching on Xbox Game Pass, there is absolutely no reason for Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One gamers to not give this gem a try. The sheer amount of love and care that went into crafting this world should be the new standard that all devs strive to achieve. I can’t wait to see what Out of the Blue have in store for us next, and I truly hope we’ll return to the world of Call of the Sea in a future title.

I eventually got chapter 2 to work, but I only got to see the beginning moments of chapter 6.. call of the sea just refuses to load leading me to have to watch the remaining 40 minutes on youtube to get this games ending… and the issue isn’t expclusive to what is admittedly a beta system in xbox game pass for pc, after looking into it, there are reports on all of the sea causing console crashes as well, there was also a bug where I would be shown a giant white blob where cinnmematics were supposed to b shown throughout the entire game!If you can get through Call of the Sea, this is a really interesting and pretty straightforward puzzle game.. but if you do decide to give this one a go, don’t do it through xbox game pass for pcit probably wont workI giv Call of the Seaa 7.5/10

If the writers weren't so eager to spoil their own surprises, I think we'd be looking at one outstanding narrative-driven adventure here. As it is, Call of the Sea is a pleasing piece of pulp fiction and a decent test of your puzzle-solving skills.

Call of the Sea continues the tradition that sees the indie industry as a tireless forge of often unmissable gems and does so by moving beyond pure genres and also playing on contrasts. That contrast that perhaps pushes Norah to find comfort in an unknown so unfathomable and surreal as to be frighteningly fascinating.

A perfectly-paced puzzle adventure that manages to pour more than the expected amount of heart into its story, it manages to combine a number of disparate elements into a hugely enjoyable game, and certainly not one to be missed.

Call of the Sea could be considered as a narrative puzzle game where the second element is much more relevant than the firs one; although both depend on each other to exist. With a series of puzzles that will take the player into a smooth back and forth between the frustrating process of looking for a solution to the problem and the satisfaction of finding it, Call of the Sea offers a proposal that follows the basic rules of the genre and It is topped off with beautiful art design and a plot that delivers what it promises.

Call of the Sea’s intriguing piecemeal story and beautiful setting falls to the wayside when its lack of signposting and overall artificially obtuse puzzles take center stage for much longer than acceptable.

Call of the Sea could benefit from having more substance, but otherwise it’s a solid adventure game that manages to put a unique spin on the traditional Lovecraftian adventure. Norah’s journey is a memorable one, thinks to some terrific dialogue and a breathtaking, surreal island full of fantastical mystery. It may not be the most challenging graphic adventure game, but it’s still one that players might want to take a look at sometime. After all, after so many sheer descents into madness, why not set out to find a welcome change of pace?

Developer Out of the Blue’s debut game is a gorgeous homage to the films and games that inspired it. Through engaging Myst-style puzzles and a captivating story, Call of the Sea triumphs in bringing its island alive, along with the characters that have explored it. It delivers a short-lived but engrossing experience through stunning art direction and an excellent voice cast, with the biggest of its minor annoyances being a slow movement speed. If a fun, but emotionally affecting adventure is what you’re searching for then Call of the Sea most definitely answers that call.
