And this is a big one. A real big one. It’s short on fizz and shiny graphics but rich on adventure and a sense of worlds, in their own mundane sense of fantasy/reality. A couple of bugs here and there, but apart from that, it’s a lovely nostalgic burst of rpg goodness. And that’s what we’re here for. Forget innovation, just take me away to grim skies and unexplored canyons and forests. One day Vogel will use a new engine. I will be very excited when that happens. Until then, this is comforting and really enjoyable.
Spiderweb Software's Vogel would be the first to admit it's a niche game for a niche audience. But the game's honesty to that niche, and its reverence for classical RPG design and structure, make it a rare, even precious breed among modern games, and there's a reason that, for all the games I've played and deleted off my iPad, I've never taken a Spiderweb Software game off it. And I'll never remove Avernum 3, either.
