tinyBuild and Serbian indie studio Hypnohead have confirmed that The King is Watching – the roguelite kingdom builder that became one of PC gaming’s surprise hits of 2025 – is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on July 29, 2026, accompanied by a new release date trailer.
A Long Road to Consoles
The King is Watching was first announced for Nintendo Switch back in 2024, with the game expected to arrive that same year. However, the PC version didn’t launch until the following summer, and console players have been waiting since. The PC version launched via Steam on July 21, 2025. The game will also become available via Microsoft Store alongside the console launch.
The wait has clearly been worth it for Hypnohead. The King is Watching has sold over 500,000 copies and was a finalist for “Strategy/Simulation Game of the Year” at the 29th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. No other game in tinyBuild’s publishing history has attracted more concurrent players, reaching a peak of 17,988.
How the Game Works
The King is Watching is a roguelite kingdom builder where players defend their castle against ever-challenging waves of enemies. The main feature is its unusual control mechanic: buildings only function when the king’s gaze is directed at them. Peasants only begin to harvest under the ruler’s close supervision, and if attention is diverted to other matters, production stops.
Resource production, troop training, and defence are only possible in buildings located within the royal field of vision. Although that field of vision can be expanded over time, players must still decide where to focus their attention in order to gather resources, train troops, and use magical powers to defend the kingdom against enemies such as goblins, orcs, and dragons.
For successful kingdom development, players must build production chains, extract rare materials, trade resources, and study ancient magic – all of which unlock more powerful buildings, strengthen the army, and reinforce defenses.

Origins: From Game Jam to Half a Million Sales
The King is Watching was first created for the October 2023 Ludum Dare 54 game jam, where it ranked third place overall. Publisher tinyBuild discovered the game in February 2024, leading to a publishing contract in March of that year.
Hypnohead is a Serbian indie studio consisting of founders Semyon Itmanyuk and Maxim, as well as another programmer. Speaking about the console launch, studio head Semyon Itmaniuk noted that “The King is Watching has had a wonderful reception on PC, but don’t get too comfortable, console players: we’ve got our eye on you too.”
