Publisher SEGA and developer Lizardcube will release a Switch 2 version of SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance on September 24. Pre-orders are available now via the Nintendo eShop.
The Switch 2 port is not a straight re-release. On the new console, the game will feature an improved resolution over the original Switch version. The release will also include content from previously released updates, including the Hardcore Mode introduced in update 1.2.0.
About the game
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance was developed by Lizardcube, the Paris-based studio that previously brought us Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and co-developed Streets of Rage 4 alongside Dotemu and Guard Crush. The game was part of SEGA’s initiative to revive dormant franchises; SEGA approached Lizardcube after being impressed by their work on both of those titles.
SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance follows longtime series protagonist and master of the ninja arts, Joe Musashi, who arrives home from a previous adventure to find his village burned to the ground and his clan turned into stone. Players must fight through more than a dozen hand-drawn stages wielding a katana, kunai, Ninjutsu arts, and Ninpo, while collecting Amulets for enhanced abilities and Ningi tools to unlock new paths.
The game first launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam on August 29, 2025. It was well-received on release – it holds an 87/100 on Metacritic for the PS5 version and a 94% recommendation rate on OpenCritic. The game was also a nominee for Best Action Game at The Game Awards.

Worth it for Switch 2 owners?
For players who skipped the game last year, the Switch 2 version is a compelling entry point. The improved resolution, Hardcore Mode inclusion, and availability of a Deluxe Edition with crossover boss content make it the most complete version of the game on a Nintendo platform. Those already holding it on original Switch will want to weigh up whether the resolution bump alone justifies a second purchase – but anyone starting fresh has a clear date to circle: September 24, 2026.
